HP ProBook 6360b

Sometimes an extra 100MHz isn't worth the money. The HP ProBook 6360b business laptop costs $989 (direct) as one of HP's ready-to-ship models with a 2.5GHz Intel Core i5-2450M processor, 500GB hard drive, and three-year parts and labor warranty. Our test configuration, however, had a slightly quicker 2.6GHz Core i5-2540M CPU and slightly smaller 320GB, 7,200-rpm hard drive. To match it, we had to go into the custom configurator on HP's enterprise site and spend $1,699. That's misleading because such corporate custom orders are rarely for quantities of one?rather, they're for IT-department buys that earn volume discounts?but still, we'd gladly settle for the 2.5GHz model and appreciate the ProBook 6360b's other charms at the expense of unnoticeably slower times in stopwatch tests.

And charms there are, though in a somewhat dated design. HP's ProBook line slots in below the company's EliteBook series as a mainstream, value-conscious choice for small to medium businesses and the likes of government offices and educational institutions. The ProBook 6360b is a 13.3-inch ultraportable with a burnished aluminum lid with latch and a magnesium-reinforced ABS plastic chassis. Though not business-rugged like the EliteBooks, it features a bottom case with a drain to help protect against minor spills.

Design
The ProBook 6360b is of course rectangular, not square, but we found ourselves thinking of it as square in a "not hip, daddy-o" way: It's a bland-looking slab measuring 1.3 by 12.7 by 8.7 inches (HWD) and weighing 4.8 pounds?definitely on the hefty side compared to, for instance, our Editors' Choice ultraportable, the 3.2-pound Toshiba Portege R835-P88.

The 13.3-inch screen offers the usual 1,366 by 768 resolution and a nice matte antiglare finish. Text and fine details looked crisp and colors were vivid across a moderate range of viewing angles. Brightness and contrast were good as long as we kept the backlight to its top three or four settings. Audio is decently loud and clear.

Its chiclet-style keyboard could be the 6360b's best feature. The layout is faultless, with dedicated Home, End, PgUp, and PgDn keys (albeit with HP's usual laptop quirk of half-sized up and down arrows sandwiched between full-sized left and right arrows), and the slightly scalloped keys fit the fingers comfortably. Typing feel is firm, with good travel. Both a touchpad and pointing stick are on hand for mouse maneuvers; the twin pairs of buttons work smoothly but the concave stick doesn't grip the finger as well as one of Lenovo's TrackPoints.

Three buttons above the keyboard toggle Wi-Fi, launch your Web browser, and mute audio. When the ProBook 6360b is switched off, the middle button launches QuickWeb, which (once configured for a favorite Wi-Fi network) brings up a browser and widgets such as a stock ticker and weather and news headlines in about 20 seconds without booting Windows.

Features
Don't look for Intel Wireless Display (WiDi) for giving presentations on an HDTV set?the ProBook 6360b doesn't even have a wired HDMI port. Nor will you find USB 3.0 for connecting up-to-date storage devices. Instead, the HP has four USB 2.0 ports?one a USB/eSATA combo port?along with Ethernet, FireWire, VGA, DisplayPort, and 56Kbps modem ports, plus microphone and headphone jacks. There's an ExpressCard slot on the left side, just above the DVD?RW drive, and an SD/MMC media reader on the front bezel.

Broadcom 802.11a/g/n Wi-Fi and Bluetooth wireless are standard, as is a docking-station connector on the laptop's bottom. A fingerprint reader below the keyboard gives added security, as does the HP ProtectTools suite preloaded on the 320GB, 7,200-rpm hard drive. The latter is a set of utilities that helps with functions such as encrypting data, managing passwords and authentication, and sanitizing files?overwriting and deleting them so they can't be recovered. Our ProBook had a three-year upgrade to the standard one-year limited warranty, which offers pick-up or carry-in protection with no on-site service.

Performance
HP ProBook 6360b Equipped with a 2.6GHz Core i5-2540M processor and 4GB of RAM, the ProBook 6360b delivers solid performance. Its PCMark 7 score of 2,305 and Handbrake video encoding time of 1 minute 45 seconds are virtually identical to the Toshiba R835-P88's 2,313 and 1:46, respectively. It tied the Lenovo ThinkPad X1 in CineBench R11.5, with a score of 2.85 points, and was a few seconds faster than its peers in Photoshop CS5 (3:48).

HP ProBook 6360b

The system's Intel HD Graphics 3000 predictably proved not up to the challenge of serious gaming, falling short of 30 frames per second in both Crysis (17.9 fps) and Lost Planet 2 (14.9 fps) at 1,024 by 768 resolution. Unfortunately, the 6360b hung up during our MobileMark 2007 battery rundown test, so we switched to our backup DVD simulation test (looping a two-hour MP4 file with screen brightness at 50 percent). The ProBook 6360b's removable 6-cell, 55Wh battery lasted 5 hours and 14 minutes. A 9-cell, 100Wh battery is an option.

The HP ProBook 6360b is a respectable contender in the 13.3-inch business laptop contest, with responsive performance and a keyboard that narrowly tops that of the Editors' Choice Toshiba Portege R835-P88. But its extra pound and a half of weight, and lack of HDMI and USB 3.0, make it hard to recommend over the Toshiba R835-P88. It's not always hip to be square.

Obama stands by hits on Romney's Bain Capital days

CHICAGO (AP) ? President Barack Obama sought to undermine Mitt Romney's key rationale for his presidential candidacy Monday, sharply attacking his Republican challenger's background as a venture capitalist and arguing that profit-making alone is not a qualification for the White House.

"His main calling card for why he thinks he should be president," Obama declared, "is his business experience."

It was Obama's most expansive argument yet against Romney, and the president delivered it from a world stage in his home town.

On the sidelines of an international summit, the Democratic incumbent attempted to dismantle his Republican rival's business pedigree while declaring it an insufficient rationale to lead the nation. In so doing, Obama left no doubt that Romney's business background as founder of Bain Capital, perceived by many as a political strength during a weak economy, would be a recurrent target of his campaign.

Romney responded swiftly, saying Obama was attacking the free-enterprise system. He made it clear that the issue would remain a point of contention for the remainder of the race.

Obama made the comments in response to a question about Newark, N.J., Mayor Cory Booker's weekend criticism of the Obama campaign's attack on Romney's private equity background. Booker, an Obama supporter, called exchanges by the campaigns over Bain "nauseating" and a distraction from issues that interest voters.

"This is not a distraction," Obama said pointedly at a news conference filled with international media that marked the end of a NATO gathering. "This is what this campaign is going to be about."

Obama argued that the priority of private equity enterprises such as Bain's is "to maximize profits."

"And that's not always going to be good for communities or businesses or workers," he said.

Obama's comments came as his campaign has been doubling down on Romney's tenure at Bain, a private equity firm he helped found in 1984. In ads and in Web videos, the campaign has drawn attention to companies that Bain took over only to close them or let them fail, costing jobs and hurting communities. Obama also has dispatched Vice President Joe Biden to battleground states ? and specifically economically struggling areas filled with white blue-collar voters ? to assail Romney on the matter.

Asked about Booker's remarks Monday, Obama praised the mayor but left no doubt that the line of attack would be central to his re-election effort.

The president was careful not to criticize private equity or profit making in general. But by standing by the Bain criticism, Obama also risked feeding a story line that he is anti-business and eager to restrain and tax the private sector in pursuit of his vision of fairness.

The line of attack illustrates Obama's complicated relationship with the business community. He has used populist language to attack Wall Street executive and bankers as "fat cats," and called for an end to tax subsidies of oil and gas companies, but he also expanded the government's rescue of the auto industry and has promoted tax breaks for small businesses.

While some of his Wall Street support has waned, he still draws a significant amount of campaign contributions from major investors, retaining a good relationship with, among others, billionaire investor Warren Buffett.

At the news conference, Obama acknowledged that businesses that seek to turn a profit by investing in struggling companies often succeed in creating new jobs and new industries ? an argument Romney himself has made in pointing to his accomplishments at Bain.

"When you're president, as opposed to the head of a private equity firm," he added, "then your job is not simply to maximize profits. Your job is to figure out how everybody in the country has a fair shot."

Romney's campaign has welcomed the election-year debate on jobs, arguing that the former Massachusetts governor generated tens of thousands of jobs in the public and private sector.

"President Obama confirmed today that he will continue his attacks on the free enterprise system, which Mayor Booker and other leading Democrats have spoken out against," Romney said in response. "What this election is about is the 23 million Americans who are still struggling to find work and the millions who have lost their homes and have fallen into poverty. President Obama refuses to accept moral responsibility for his failed policies. My campaign is offering a positive agenda to help America get back to work."

Obama's attack underscores his campaign's recognition that the economy trumps all other issues.

While the economy has begun to recover under his presidency, the turnabout has been slow and marked by high unemployment that remains above 8 percent. For Obama, his challenge is persuading voters to stick with him as he tries to help the economy rebound while withstanding criticism from Romney that the president's policies have hindered the recovery.

Bridesmaids: How Do You Choose? ? wedding preview event

Choosing your bridesmaids. This is a tough subject. I?ve literally been sitting in front of my computer searching through Hulu to see what TV episodes I?ve missed. I?ve looked through wedding blogs (blah..same ol, same ol) and I?ve created some new files to keep my brain in order. This is what I do when I don?t know what to do.

When it comes to advice, I?m not one to seek it. In fact, if someone tells me what I should do, out of spite, I try the other way first. I?m a firm believer that everyone?s situation is different and there?s more grey area in this world than there is black and white. This is why I?m procrastinating.

If this is your first time reading our blog, we should let you know that we?re not about pretty photo shoots or beautiful inspiration. We?re about real-life. We talk about subjects that apply to weddings, planning and your personal life as if you are here with us. We?re not professionals and we rarely go back through and edit our posts. This is us?in real-life. The reason for my sharing this information with you: I?m about to jump into a personal story and I wanted to lure you in.

Alright: Bridesmaid talk. When I got engaged, I had a best friend who had been by my side for a loooong time. She?d been with me through past relationships and was instrumental in getting my, now, husband and I together. However, shortly after we started dating and especially after we got engaged, there was some distance between us because my focus had moved and our friendship wasn?t what it had been. During that time, I got closer with a ?new? friend who was already in a friendship circle my boyfriend and I had become close with. When it came time to choose my bridesmaids, I chose my new friend as the maid of honor, my ?old? friend as a bridesmaid and added on my cousin and a friend I?d known since I was a kid. Today, the only person I speak to on a regular basis is my cousin. Nice job, Tawsha. Nice job.

So, how do you choose your bridesmaids? Who is the Maid/Matron of honor?

  • My opinion (after experiencing the wrong decision): Don?t go with tradition. Get girls together, create a supportive team and choose your standing order by drawing names. You think I?m kidding, don?t you? I?m so not.
  • The Knot?s opinions are HERE.
  • The Bridal Guide?s opinions are HERE.

Do you think this advice is sound or are we all bat-sh*t crazy?

U.N. nuclear agency chief heads to Tehran

VIENNA (AP) -- The head of the U.N. nuclear agency flew to Tehran on Sunday on a delicate mission that ? if successful ? could finally lift the veil on whether Iran is seeking atomic arms while strengthening the Islamic Republic's negotiating hand in crucial nuclear talks with six world powers later in the week.

The trip by International Atomic Energy Agency chief Yukiya Amano is focused on getting agreement from Iran to terms that will allow the agency to resume probing whether Tehran secretly worked on nuclear arms.

Even if that happens, Western diplomats have expressed skepticism that Iran will honor a deal. But with both Iran and the IAEA reporting progress in a previous round last week, anticipation was high as Amano prepared to board his flight to Tehran.

While expressing some optimism, Amano said he could not predict whether he would clinch a deal that would allow his agency to renew its long-stalled probe.

"Nothing is certain in life, in diplomacy," he told reporters at Vienna's airport. "But there has been good progress.

"I really think this is the right time to reach agreement."

The one-day trip is significant both for what it can achieve in terms of probing Iran's secretive nuclear program and as a mood-setter for talks Wednesday in Baghdad between Iran and the United States, Russia, China, Britain, France and Germany.

The latter six nations are in the forefront of trying to persuade Tehran to curb its nuclear program and ease concerns it wants to use it to make nuclear weapons.

Iran will seek to stay looming U.S. and European Union sanctions on its oil exports at the Baghdad talks.

The six in turn will attempt to get Iran to commit to stop enriching uranium to a level that can be turned quickly into the fissile core of nuclear warheads, while ignoring ? for now? its program of lower enrichment, which would take longer to turn toward weapons-making.

Iran insists it is enriching uranium only to produce nuclear fuel. It denies that it worked secretly on developing components of a nuclear arms program, despite what the IAEA describes as credible intelligence and other evidence that it hid work "specific to nuclear weapons."

Amano's visit and the talks in Baghdad are thus separate but indirectly related ? a point that Amano touched on as well, saying he hoped they "will give (a) positive good impact (on) each other." His lead partner in the Tehran talks will be Saeed Jalili, Iran's chief nuclear negotiator, who will also lead his country's delegation to Baghdad.

Western diplomats following the IAEA's work are skeptical that Iran would honor the terms of any deal suddenly allowing the IAEA access to sites, people and documents it seeks in its probe, pointing out that Tehran has stonewalled the agency's efforts since 2007. They say Tehran is seeking to make points ahead of the Baghdad talks, where it would refer to any deal with the IAEA as a sign of its good will and demand that the upcoming sanctions on Iranian oil be suspended.

Diplomats told The Associated Press ahead of the Baghdad talks that there is agreement among the six powers not to give in to such demands. G-8 leaders last week set the stage for a united release of world oil reserves to balance any disruption in world markets when those tough new sanctions are imposed. President Barack Obama said world powers "are unified in our approach to Iran."

Still, an Iran-IAEA deal could reopen fissures among the six, with Russia and China ? traditional opponents of tough anti-Iran sanctions ? demanding that the oil penalties be held up to reward the Islamic Republic's approval of a deal with the IAEA.

Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov said the Baghdad talks should already focus on lifting of sanctions if Iran shows signs of compromise, in comments reported Sunday by the Itar-Tass news agency.

"Russia denies the efficiency of sanctions against Iran; it thinks that the sanctions are driving the problem into an impasse," he was quoted as saying. "Yet bearing in mind the adherence of Western partners to sanctions, I think they should think about the time when the sanctions may be suspended and lifted."

Amano deferred an Iranian invitation to visit Tehran last year, saying he would go only if he was assured of progress in the standoff over the IAEA probe. Pressed at the airport whether he expected to come back with a deal in his pocket, he repeated that "nothing is certain but ... I stay positive."

Coffee drinkers have lower risk of death, study suggests

ScienceDaily (May 19, 2012) ? Older adults who drank coffee -- caffeinated or decaffeinated -- had a lower risk of death overall than others who did not drink coffee, according a study by researchers from the National Cancer Institute (NCI), part of the National Institutes of Health, and AARP.

Coffee drinkers were less likely to die from heart disease, respiratory disease, stroke, injuries and accidents, diabetes, and infections, although the association was not seen for cancer. These results from a large study of older adults were observed after adjustment for the effects of other risk factors on mortality, such as smoking and alcohol consumption. Researchers caution, however, that they can't be sure whether these associations mean that drinking coffee actually makes people live longer. The results of the study were published in the May 17, 2012 edition of the New England Journal of Medicine.

Neal Freedman, Ph.D., Division of Cancer Epidemiology and Genetics, NCI, and his colleagues examined the association between coffee drinking and risk of death in 400,000 U.S. men and women ages 50 to 71 who participated in the NIH-AARP Diet and Health Study. Information about coffee intake was collected once by questionnaire at study entry in 1995-1996. The participants were followed until the date they died or Dec. 31, 2008, whichever came first.

The researchers found that the association between coffee and reduction in risk of death increased with the amount of coffee consumed. Relative to men and women who did not drink coffee, those who consumed three or more cups of coffee per day had approximately a 10 percent lower risk of death. Coffee drinking was not associated with cancer mortality among women, but there was a slight and only marginally statistically significant association of heavier coffee intake with increased risk of cancer death among men.

"Coffee is one of the most widely consumed beverages in America, but the association between coffee consumption and risk of death has been unclear. We found coffee consumption to be associated with lower risk of death overall, and of death from a number of different causes," said Freedman. "Although we cannot infer a causal relationship between coffee drinking and lower risk of death, we believe these results do provide some reassurance that coffee drinking does not adversely affect health."

The investigators caution that coffee intake was assessed by self-report at a single time point and therefore might not reflect long-term patterns of intake. Also, information was not available on how the coffee was prepared (espresso, boiled, filtered, etc.); the researchers consider it possible that preparation methods may affect the levels of any protective components in coffee.

"The mechanism by which coffee protects against risk of death -- if indeed the finding reflects a causal relationship -- is not clear, because coffee contains more than 1,000 compounds that might potentially affect health," said Freedman. "The most studied compound is caffeine, although our findings were similar in those who reported the majority of their coffee intake to be caffeinated or decaffeinated."
